India and Japan
have signed a MoU for mutal co-operation in Intellecutal Property Rights matters entailing capacity building. Information exchange and experience sharing are also envisaged in the agreement. Both India and Japan shall draw up annual plans to implement the MoU for the purpose of carrying out the cooperational activities.

The Union Cabinet has approved the proposal for India's accession to Intentional Unon for Protection of New Varieties of Plants Convention 1978. which ensures and recognise IPR to breeders of new plant variety.

The USPTO's rejection of four patents filed by Gilead in relation to a key HIV drug tenofovir might have a positive impact on opposition filed against thos applications in India. The applications have been rejected on the ground of lack of novelty on a challenge by a US public interest Organisation. The decision of USPTO strengthens the opposition pending against those applications in India.
